Since the introduction of the Oyster case in 1926, Rolex has occupied an important position in the development and manufacture of waterproof watches at that time. Rolex has always set its sights on making watches that meet the practical needs of divers, and in the 1950s began to collaborate with diving pioneers on several occasions to conduct field experiments. After numerous explorations and technical innovations, Rolex was able to launch the first watch waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet) in 1953. A year later, the Submariner’s water resistance was increased to 200 metres (660 feet) and was equipped with additional innovations such as the luminescent material applied to the small circle at the end of the hour hand to make the hours more distinguishable, high quality fake watches and the addition of a crown shoulder. In 1969, the Submariner Calendar was introduced with a date display. In 1979, the water resistance was further increased from 200 metres to 300 metres (1,000 feet) and in 1989, the Submariner reached the same depth.
This year, both star models have been given a new design: the case diameter has been increased from 40 mm to 41 mm, the middle link of the strap has been widened and the lugs have been narrowed. On closer inspection, the new Submariner Oyster steel model has a black dial and a rotating bezel with Cerachrom ceramic lettering in the same colour. The gold steel version of the Submariner Calendar (a combination of Oyster steel and 18ct gold) has a royal blue dial, rotating bezel and blue lettering. The other two Submariner Calendar models return to their original colour scheme, with a black dial and green bezel on the Oyster steel model and a black dial and blue bezel on the 18ct white gold model.

Again, accurate time reading is crucial to diving and is a matter of life and death. The dials of the Submariner and Submariner Calendar models are designed with an emphasis on legibility. The hour and minute hands are clearly differentiated in shape and size and are presented in different geometric shapes — triangular, orologi replica di lusso round and rectangular — to make them easy to read. The hands, the clock markers and the dot inside the inverted triangle symbol are coated with Chromalight, a luminescent material that gives a lasting blue glow in the dark.
With its high-end technology, Rolex has developed a one-piece ceramic bezel and ceramic lettering ring that are scratch-resistant and protected from the elements. The new Submariner and Submariner Calendar models are equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel and a 60-minute Cerachrom ceramic bezel to help divers keep track of their dive time. The die-cast indexes and numerals are platinum or gold plated using the PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) technique. The toothed outer ring facilitates grip and allows divers to set dive times easily even when wearing gloves.

On the back of the watch, the finely pitted caseback is screwed on with a special tool exclusive to Rolex, ensuring a watertight seal to 300 metres. The winding crown features a triple water-resistance system with a three-button lock, and the crown shoulder is integrated into the middle case. The new model features an Oyster bracelet with a Rolex-designed folding Oyster safety clasp to prevent accidental opening, hoge kwaliteit nep horloges and a Rolex Glidelock extension system that makes it easy to gradually extend the bracelet without tools up to a maximum of approximately 20 mm.
